Great Dixter House and Garden, East Sussex

The Great Dixter Estate is a fascinating collection of Grade I and Grade II listed buildings. Assembled by Edwin Lutyens, they date from the medieval period through to 1910.

CTP were appointed part of the team headed by Appleyards to design and implement refurbishment works and improvements including Great Dixter House and The Great Barn, both timber framed structures. CTP designed essential repairs to the exposed oak frames in keeping with their historic nature and to avoid replacement. This work required careful assessment of the performance of existing structures that could not be proved to modern design standards. The structural repairs were specified using judgment and experience and necessitated detailed inspection during the works by our most experienced engineers.

They required judgment of the benefits of intervention over reduction of risk to fabric.

The project was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Wolfson Foundation and the Friends of Great Dixter as well as private donations.
