Greyfriars Church underwent significant alterations to enable the building to be modernised. Part of the works included the removal of the bottom two metres of the gable end wall to enable a seamless connection between the existing building and the proposed modern extension.

The gable end wall is a metre thick and some nine metres tall. It contains several stone mullions and stained glass windows, which required the temporary works to allow very minimal movement. In addition, the underfloor heating system prevented traditional needling as an option.

CTP were commissioned to design the temporary works, which included a cantilevered steel frame supported by temporary concrete reinforced pad foundations.  This ensured that temporary loads were not transferred internally and the gable end wall, its stone mullions and stained glass windows were not adversely affected during the installation of the permanent works.
