Oxford Airport Helicopter Servicing Facility

CTP provided foundation design and civil engineering consultancy services for the construction of the new helicopter servicing facility at Oxford Airport.  The new building will be home for 250 employees and can hold up to 32 helicopters which are due to be maintained and serviced in the new building. Externally there are eight landing pads for helicopters of all sizes.

The detailed design of the steel frame was carried out by a specialist structural steelwork supplier and installer who carried out the detailed design of the frame. CTP were supplied with foundation loads and were responsible for the foundation and ground floor slab designs including external aprons.

Of particular interest were the need to design some rather large bases to provide wind uplift load resistance generated when the very large hanger doors are open with a relatively lightly loaded superstructure. The largest of these concrete bases measured 5.5m by 5.5m and was 2.4m thick to mobilise the necessary resistance to uplift.

In addition, a 900mm diameter storm water sewer serving the main runway passed under the building and had to be incorporated into the foundation design.
