St Angelo’s Bridge, Malta

Located in the historic area of Birgu, in Malta CTP have provided Civil and Structural design services related to two new bridges near Fort St. Angelo. The existing bridge, estimated to have been constructed in the early 1900’s, is utilised by pedestrians and vehicles and over time the condition of this had deteriorated.

The project replaces the existing bridge with two new structures, one dedicated for vehicle use and the other for pedestrians which will provide attractive enhancements to the historic area whilst also leading to an increase in pedestrian safety by providing a separate route for pedestrians away from vehicular traffic.

CTP undertook highway alignment design for the road bridge and provided full structural and civils design for both structures. This is a highly complex project in a constrained area and our design ensured that the works to install the two bridges could be carried out independently of each other in order to maintain accessibility. Phase 1 comprises construction of the pedestrian bridge whilst retaining the existing vehicular access and this has now been installed on site. Phase 2 is for the installation of the new road bridge which will commence on site shortly.

CTP have provided civil and structural engineering services on this project including:

  • Survey and assessment of existing structure
  • Highway alignment design – 2D and 3D analysis
  • Vehicle tracking and ground clearance review
  • Structural and civil engineering design for road and pedestrian bridges
  • 3D Revit modelling for new structures to enable fabrication and construction
