INWED 2025 – Together We Engineer
In celebration of International Women in Engineering Day 2025, we asked our engineers to reflect on their journey, what inspired them, what’s changed in the industry, and what still needs to change.
Here are just some of their stories told with honesty, humour, ambition and hope:
- What inspired you to become an engineer?
“I greatly enjoyed maths during school, but I wanted to do something practical too. One of my siblings went into engineering, and it looked fun!”
- What do you enjoy most about engineering?
“Being creative and turning ideas into real-world solutions.”
“I love that I can pass by a project and say, ‘I worked on that!”
- What challenges have you faced as a woman in engineering?
“I once had to do a last-minute site visit in a dress – not ideal, but I made it work!”
“Being a mum in the industry comes with different assumptions than my male colleagues get. People still expect it to affect me more.”
- How has the industry improved for women?
“I haven’t been treated differently to my colleagues, which already says a lot.”
“There are more and more women in the industry that it’s not as unusual as it used to be.”
- What changes would you still like to see?
“We need more inclusive workplace cultures where diversity isn’t just a checkbox. That includes seeing more women in leadership, transparency around pay, and normalising flexible working for everyone, not just mums.”
“It’s about challenging everyday assumptions, like who gets heard in meetings, or who people assume is in charge on-site.”
- Where do you see yourself in 5 – 10 years?
“I want to continue developing my skills, mentoring others, and promoting engineering to young women. I’d love to work in a team where flexibility and balance are just normal.”
“I’m aiming to become a Chartered Engineer and an inspiration to young girls entering the field.”
- What does INWED mean to you?
“It’s about celebrating women who’ve overcome challenges in a male-dominated industry and inspiring others to follow.”
“It’s a moment to recognise how far we’ve come, and how far we still have to go.”
- Advice for future engineers:
“The first step is always the hardest, so just keep going.”
“The only obstacles are the ones we put there ourselves.”
“Be yourself, quality always shines through, no matter your gender.”
“Engineering is fun! Yes, it’s stressful at times, but also incredibly rewarding. You get to solve real-world problems and meet amazing people.”
At its heart, engineering is about solving problems together, sharing ideas, building trust, and lifting each other up.
This #INWED2025, we celebrate the strength that comes from collaboration, as Together We Engineer.
